(using TimberBrite and DEFY)
Preparation for cedar decks…
Clean deck with TimberBrite wood brightener and pressure wash. Allow to dry a minimum of 24 hours. Lightly sand dry surfaces to be stained with 60 to 80 grit sandpaper. A pole sander works well for the deck flooring. Sand with the direction of the wood grain. Do not use an orbital sander or other type of power sander. This light sanding or scuffing is a critical step to remove mill glaze and ensure the proper penetration of the wood finish. When a few drops of water absorb into the wood in 1-2 seconds then i is ready for the next step. Apply water repellent wood finish according to label instructions.
Preparation for cedar log homes and cedar wood sided homes…
Clean logs to remove graying dirt soil or other stain treatments by using TimberBrite Wood Brightener and pressure wash with 1500 PSI minimum. Allow to dry 24 hours. Lightly sand dry log surfaces to be stained with 60 to 80 grit sandpaper. This opens wood pores to accept DEFY stain penetration. Sand in direction of the wood grain. Orbital power sanders are not recommended due to pore blockage. This light sanding or scuffing is a critical step to remove mill glaze and open pores to ensure proper penetration of DEFY wood finish. Check wood porosity and absorbency applying a few drops of water to see if they readily absorb in 1-2 seconds. If so you are ready for the next step. Apply DEFY according to label instructions.
